Packing Tips for Moving House

Packing up your life and moving down the road or across the country takes time, effort and is undoubtedly stressful however it doesn’t need to be disastrous. Reduce the stress and read these packing tips and you’ll be relaxing in your new home before you know it.

Preparation

• Declutter – save the hassle of packing moving and unpacking unwanted or unused items only to throw them out at a later date. Go through the whole house and decide if there’s anything you can bin, sell, or donate.

• Get packing supplies – you will need strong good quality boxes in a range of sizes, strong packing tape, bubble wrap & old newspapers.

• Start early – packing can often take longer than anticipated so plan to start packing as far in advance as possible

Packing Tips

• Work from the top down. If you have an attic/loft start here and work your way down room by room.

• Always pack heavy items in small boxes, this will make carrying them easier.

• Use larger boxes for the lightest items. A Large box full of heavy items can cause injury when transporting.

• Pack heavy items in the bottom and lighter items on top to avoid damages.

• Pack one room at a time, clearly labelling each box with details of its contents and the room to which it belongs.

• Clearly label boxes that contain breakables.

• Keep all boxes for each room together. This will save time unpacking.

• For any fragile or breakable items wrap them individually and place in a box that's been lined with newspaper and a sheet of bubble wrap.

• Pillows and blankets are also useful for wrapping valuables and protecting furniture prone to dents and scratches.

• Pack important documents together, such as passports, birth, and marriage certificates, and keep them in a safe place.

• Have an essentials box or bag – for anything you may need on the day so you can easily have it to hand.
